James F. Hanley (1917)

Composed by James F. Hanley with lyrics by Ballard MacDonald, "Back Home Again In Indiana" was released as "Indiana" in 1917 borrowing lyrics from the well-known-at-the-time and official state song of Indiana, "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away."

Considered a jazz standard, the song has been covered in many genres of music by many artists. Most notably, however, Louis Armstrong and his All Stars would open every public performance with their jazz instrumental of the song.

"Back Home Again In Indiana" might be best known because of its association with the Indianapolis 500. Pre-race ceremonies began including the singing of the song in 1946, with Jim Nabors' performing the honor from 1972 until 2014.

We feature the original 1917 version here.
